The Old Guard (2020 on Netflix)

old.png

Holy Lord Almighty. CHARLIZE THERON?! I mean, damn...

An army (of 5) nearly immortal super soldiers go around the world saving people undercover. They try to keep their immortal identity a secret. However, Dudley from Harry Potter desperately wants to be the first to create the ultimate medicine and will go to all lengths to advance his product, his ultimate mission is to capture these people to use them as human test subjects.

If you like Marvel action movies, this is a movie rec for you. It is so hype, with a great premise. these immortal beings have been alive for so long, they have mastered every type of fighting style imaginable. That scene of Theron duel welding a roman gladius with a handgun... Chef kisses. The frickin ax in action, yes please. If a second movie is made, I can't wait to see the Asian in action. #theMulanIwant.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 (2020)

umprella.png

Cult followers, Swedish brothers, Lesbian lovers, oh my!

In a desperate attempt to avoid the apocalypse, Five sends his siblings back to the '60s, scattering them throughout the decade. They learn to live a normal life there: from trying for another family to starting a cult. when Five arrives, the apocalypse dooms to happen yet again. Gathering the six of them proves to be difficult as the Watcher does anything to thwart their plans. Swedish brothers were also hired to assassinate the members of the Umbrella academy. and Vanya, poor Vanya is yet again the bomb that starts the apocalypse once more. Will they fix the end of the world? Or will they run away again? Aliens?!

This was so fun to watch. Especially Klaus and his cult that he accidentally starts. And Ben. Oh, sweet Ben. This also answers the question about the other people who were born at the same time, meeting another person with powers. Loved it.

Japan Sinks 2020 (2020... duh)

sink.png

An earthquake hits Japan. Japan starts sinking bit by bit.

We follow a girl, as she and her family struggle to survive the dangers of post-earthquake Japan. As each episode forces to meet it's one death per episode quota, they travel their way through Japan, escaping near-death experiences and hopefully towards safety. Along the way, they meet a lot of interesting people, places and... a cult? Well, I guess, why not.

This was absolutely wack. Like yeah, sure I guess. My favorite parts: Grampa's 360 no scope with a bow and arrow, the boy dying from a stone falling on his head, the sprint across the sea. Hate on the cult arc all you want, it gave us some of the best moments of this anime. Some of the bad: Every time the boy spoke English (my ears), people just dying for shock value, the cult arc really slowing down the pace of the show.

It's just propaganda about how amazing Japan is for the Olympics that never happened... Muahahaha

BEASTARS (2019)

beast.png

Haha. Why didn't I finish this earlier?

Ever had questions about Zootopia? Beastars is here to answer those questions. A Thespian Gray wolf learns about his predator instincts one day as he catches the scent of a rabbit. He stops just in time, but it haunts him. The next day, he meets the rabbit, learning more about her. This predator instinct of his slowly manifests into... love? Can a predator love a prey? Bet you were thinking that about Judy Hopps and Nick you sicko. Well turns out you were not alone.

Why was this so good? The end, when he accepts who he is, and manifests his preditor instincts into a "guardian angel" way, chills. The cool panda (an omnivore choosing to eat only bamboo? Spirit animal much?). Deer boy's tragic backstory, oh my Lord. And the hint to the next season, please, take my soul.

Great Pretender (2020)

pretender.png

Been wanting an Ocean's movie but anime? Wanna travel the world because quarantine had got you feeling well... stuck? Here is an anime for you!

Edamame the bean finds himself routed into a crew or confidence men, scamming people of high stature. But it's ok because they're all bad people. Together, they seemingly find cases that open up the tragic backstory of the crew, as they make millions off of these low life high ballers. And the end credits, my god. The song is the Great Pretender by Freddie Mercury and pulls inspiration from the music video itself. The opening credits remind me of the opening credits of that Leo movie... Catch me if you can (great movie, highly recommend). It's so great. Please watch.

I was curious so I started it. Anime is so much easier to watch on Netflix (sorry crunchyroll)

I love it. It's so nestalgic for some reason. Ok, it reminds me of Vicky the Viking, where a group of vikings go on adventures and defeat bad guys Man, it takes me back.

So, Luffy is basically Vicky, but rubbery and not very smart. he has a very clear goal in mind, which is always good in a story: become the king of Pirates. To become the king of the Pirates, he must first gather a crew. Here, we meet Zoro first, like that Spanish superhero that makes three slashes on whatever wooden surface in a Z formation (oooohhhh). Also, Usopp, who is comedic relief (tech guy). Nami, who's the girl (wow, thanks). But she is good at navigating too. And the one who's the lady chaser, Seiji, who can also cook up a mean dish. With a 5 man band, they head for the Grand Line.

The Arrog arc made me cry so bad. Nami stabbing her tattoo made me feel stuff I wasn't expecting to feel.

One Piece- Alabasta (2001)

twopiece.png

Ok. Here's my issue with this season.

We are introduced to Miss Wednesday, right? who turns out to be the Princess. (Vivi) The whale hunting (if you can even call it an arc) seems just so out of place for a bounty hunter organization, which was never resolved. Her character as Miss Wednesday and the Princess are so different (even if she was just acting) it was a little jarring. I felt like the transition could have been done better. It was an issue to me because first impressions last.

I loved Chopper's arc. It was so enduring. Ace reminds me of a cool Leo (percy jackson) and I'm all here for that. As a whole, The Alabasta arc was great, it was just not as enjoyable because of the first impression mentioned before. Princess Vivi screaming to stop fighting at the clock tower, oh my heart can't take it. The X of friendship as they sailed away, gods.
